Carlo Ancelotti spoke at the press room in Ciudad Real Madrid ahead of the match against Sevilla on Matchday 37 of La Liga. He reflected on the upcoming fixture and the season as a whole:
“We’ve always found it tough at the Sánchez-Pizjuán. Our goal is to finish the season well. There are only two games left. We did well against Mallorca, and we have to do well again tomorrow.”
On Dean Huijsen
“Dean Huijsen a fantastic player with huge potential. It’s a very good signing. Every Real Madrid signing brings excitement, because this club always aims for the top. Last year, we didn’t think about reinforcing that position because we had Alaba, Militão, and Carvajal returning, but injuries have taken their toll.”
When asked whether the club had ignored his requests for reinforcements, he replied:
“No, the club has listened to me. Since I arrived, Real Madrid has signed Camavinga, Rüdiger, Bellingham, Tchouaméni, and Mbappé. Can I really ask for more? I don’t think so.”
“Every decision has been agreed with the coaching staff and myself. There’s nothing more to add. We had similar injury issues last season and managed to cope, but this year it’s been more complicated.”
On the La Liga title race
“Was it a lack of belief? No. This team has always believed, even when no one else did. All our comebacks have been about believing and never giving up. The real problem was the injuries in defense — and we’re talking about key players. In the last Clásico, none of the starting back four were available: Carvajal, Militão, Rüdiger, Mendy, and Alaba were all out.”
“That’s part of football. Sometimes you’re not able to get the best out of everyone. Barcelona played beautiful football and deserved the title. Next year will be a different story — with Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atlético all fighting for it.”
On Mbappé’s season and the Golden Boot race
“It’s a big motivation. Scoring 40 goals is impressive, and for a first season at Real Madrid, it’s excellent. I believe he still has more to give, but let’s be honest: it’s been a fantastic debut season for him.”
On his enjoyment and his coaching staff
“I’m still enjoying my time here, even if we hoped to be fighting for the title until the end. I’ll enjoy it until the last day and then focus on the next challenge.”
“Davide is a key part of my coaching staff — and not just because he’s my son. I trust him completely. He tells me things that others might not dare to say. The whole staff is young, full of energy, and keeps me thinking. They have experience despite their age. The analytics team, led by Simone, is excellent. Real Madrid will benefit from this work in the future. We’re like a family — and that kind of environment brings out the best in all of us.”
On the squad’s performance this season
“We could have gotten more from ourselves, but I will never criticize players like Valverde, Vini Jr., Rodrygo, or Courtois — they’ve brought me so much joy over the past four years. They will always be the best in my eyes, even if at times they don’t perform at their peak.”
On the praise from fellow managers
“I really appreciate the affection from my colleagues. It means a lot. It shows they value my work and who I am as a person. That’s why I’m going to enjoy these last few days.”
