In fact, very few clubs remain where the owners are the members themselves, as most are companies (SAD), like Atlético de Madrid or Valencia, where a single owner or a group of owners control the club and make all the decisions. This is not the case with Real Madrid, where the members are in charge.
Despite “state-owned” clubs controlled by wealthy owners, like Manchester City, Chelsea, or PSG, Real Madrid has defended its member-owned model. With Florentino Pérez at the helm, they have resisted the temptation of external investment, ensuring that, to this day, the club remains in the hands of its members.
Can Anyone Become a Real Madrid Member?
This is the million-dollar question, and unfortunately, the answer is… NO! Since Real Madrid is owned by its members, there are restrictions on who can become one and how many can be admitted. This is to prevent a wealthy investor from registering 50,000 members and taking control of the club. Another reason for these limits is the capacity of the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, which holds 80,000 spectators. Having 200,000 members wouldn’t make sense if most of them couldn’t attend matches as season ticket holders.
In recent years, access to new members has become even more restricted. Currently, only those whose parents or grandparents are already members can apply for membership, as stated on the club’s official website.
a. New Member Registration: To become a new Real Madrid member, you must be the child or grandchild of a current member. Once this requirement is met, the applicant must complete the membership registration form and submit the necessary documentation proving their relationship at the club’s Member Services Office.
Yes, this significantly limits who can and cannot become a member. Having friends, uncles, or cousins who are members is not enough anymore.
Additionally, to run for Real Madrid’s presidency, a member must have at least 20 years of membership and be able to provide a financial guarantee of 15% of the club’s budget (for a €1 billion budget, that would be a €150 million guarantee from the entire board of directors).
This requirement has led to uncontested elections, with Florentino Pérez running unopposed in the latest election held in January 2025.
Even rumors of tennis star Rafa Nadal potentially becoming Real Madrid’s president remain uncertain since he is not an official member but only an honorary one. He would technically be ineligible unless an assembly approved an exception or recognized honorary membership as equivalent to regular membership.
However, don’t lose hope! The rules have changed before, and they could open new membership periods where non-direct relatives can join through recommendations from existing members. But as of today, without a direct parent or grandparent who is a member, you cannot join. You can, however, get the Madridista Card.
How Many Members Does Real Madrid Have?
According to the latest 2024 General Assembly, Real Madrid had 95,612 members. This number fluctuates due to deaths, voluntary resignations, and new births, as many members enroll their newborn children as members immediately (membership is free until age 11). Your member number also changes over time due to these adjustments.

Regarding gender distribution, while exact figures are not available, it is estimated that around 73% of members are men and 27% are women. Membership fees change annually. The current 2024 fees, approved at the General Assembly, are (excluding VAT):

Since only those with direct relatives as members can join, being a member gives you the power to register your children or grandchildren easily.
4. Discounts on Tickets and Early Access
Members receive up to 20% discounts on match tickets and enjoy priority access. This is crucial for high-demand matches, like El Clásico or the Champions League final, where tickets sell out quickly.
