Today is a happy day for Madrid fans 😁
There’s no denying the intense rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid — so much so that when Arsenal knocked Real Madrid out, Barça fans celebrated it more than winning La Liga.
Naturally, the same thing happens the other way around. Yesterday, Inter knocked Barcelona out of the Champions League — a very strong Barcelona side that looked set to win the treble (La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Champions League) — in a crazy tie that ended 3–3 in the first leg and 4–3 in the second (7–6 for Inter overall).
And of course, Madrid fans erupted with joy after the 4–3 in extra time. Not all Madridistas, it’s true, but let’s not pretend that most of us weren’t thrilled about their elimination.
A great example of that was the legendary Guti, a Real Madrid icon, who yesterday on El Chiringuito (Spain’s most-watched football talk show) captured the Madridista sentiment perfectly.
Culé hypocrisy
Another iconic moment came after the match, when Barcelona and Hansi Flick — who had spent weeks bragging about how they didn’t complain about referees like Real Madrid supposedly does — suddenly rushed to blame the referee for their loss. Today, Barça fans and pro-Barça media (like Sport) have been slamming the referee all day long.
Basically, they’re doing exactly what they accused Madrid of doing… they’ve shown their true colors. And the truth is, the referee did a decent job. Sure, he leaned a bit toward the home side — but that’s the same as in the first leg, when a goal was disallowed for Inter over a 1 cm offside using a questionable frame. They’re just used to being favored by the refs, so when they’re not, they see it as a disaster.
