Yesterday, we were feeling very down and sad after the home defeat against Valencia (1-2). The general feeling among Madrid fans was that La Liga was already lost.
But luckily, a few hours later, Barcelona played Betis in La Liga. If Barcelona had won, they would’ve practically sealed the title — but there was a surprise! They drew the match 1-1, so they only gained 1 point over Real Madrid, increasing their lead in the standings from 3 to 4 points (plus the goal difference, which is heavily in their favor).
Is the title race still alive?
The league is very difficult now, mainly because Barcelona doesn’t look like they’re going to drop many points, and Real Madrid hasn’t been especially solid lately either, winning games by just 1 goal or even losing, like yesterday.
But the reality is that there are still 8 league matches left = 24 points to play for. And one of those games is El Clásico! It’ll be played on May 11th (time TBD), in Barcelona (at Montjuïc, since the Camp Nou is still under renovation).
If Real Madrid were to win that match (and if we lose, obviously the league is out of reach), the gap would be cut down to just 1 point (plus goal difference).
Here’s who Real Madrid still has to face: Alavés, Athletic Club, Getafe, Celta Vigo, Barcelona, Mallorca, Sevilla, and Real Sociedad.
And Barcelona’s remaining fixtures are: Leganés, Celta Vigo, Mallorca, Valladolid, Real Madrid, Espanyol, Villarreal, and Athletic Club.
Realistically, we’d probably have to win all 8 remaining games and hope for a bit of luck. But aside from El Clásico, it’s very likely Barcelona could slip up in at least one other match — especially since their last 3 games are tough.
